Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, University of Illinois
ABE 469 Industry-Linked Design Project
Emphasizes open-ended design projects which utilize principles of design, engineering analysis and functional operation of engineering systems. Projects are submitted and sponsored by industrial clients, design team developed, concepts visualized, alternative evaluated and geometry created using CAD systems. Emphasis on communication skills, technical writing, and interaction with industry representatives. Students operate in a team-based industrial environment with "real life" industrial projects.
4 Credit Hours.
Course Objectives:
Experience modern engineering design practice and the product development processes with team oriented, industry-sponsored design projects. Emphasis on written and oral communication skills, technical presentations, development of interpersonal skills, economic justification of designs and product development processes and teamwork.
Topics covered: Product development, economic justification and liability; design software tools; statistical methods in design; ethics; quality and reliability; team building; cost-based and manufacturability-based design; project budgeting and scheduling; intellectual property; career planning and interviewing; product/project evaluation; and contemporary engineering issues.
