TSM 422 Ag Health-Illnesses Prevention

Overview of occupational illnesses and diseases in the agricultural industry and its practicies. Hazards within agricultural production are examined and potential hazards to non-farm populations and those interacting with production personnel are explored. Agricultural industry practices are summarized and potential human health effects of specific practices identified. Specific preventative measures are outlined to reduce exposures and remediate exposure symptoms. Interaction with health/medical professionals is on-going during the semester to familiarize students with medical procedures pertinent to agricultural occupational medicine.

Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe unique characteristics of production agriculture as they relate to occupational health issues.
  2. Summarize agricultural production practices and identify health issues related to production practices.
  3. Relate the major contributing factors associated with occupational illness and disease to specific production-related hazards.
  4. Describe the industrial hygiene framework by which illnesses related to production agriculture should be addressed.
  5. Describe applicable regulations implemented to prevent agricultural illness and disease.
  6. Differentiate among and describe specific hazards faced by rural, non-farm populations as well as special populations within production agriculture.
  7. Identify and describe appropriate interventions to address agricultural health issues.
