Arden Weiss, AgE Alumnus, gives back to department through EVS Initiative

Arden Weiss (BS '61 AgE, MS '65 AgE) was an agricultural engineer before he knew what agricultural engineering was.

“I grew up on a farm and attended school in Freeburg, Illinois,” says Arden. “My high school taught me two things I’ve used all my life – electrical wiring and welding. I did all the welding that needed to be done on the farm in those days, and I designed an auger wagon out of an old John Deere combine bin. It didn’t hold 1200 bushels like they run now,” he says with a laugh, “but we used the heck out of it. It sure beat shoveling those soybeans.”

Jordan Blake Banks is Fulbright grant recipient

Jordan Blake Banks, a recent graduate of the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, is a 2019 recipient of the Fulbright grant. Banks will use her grant to pursue a master’s degree in bioenergy systems at the Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT) in Finland.

2019 Certified Livestock Manager training workshops

URBANA, Ill. - The 2019 Certified Livestock Manager Training workshops, will be held in 11 locations throughout the state, beginning Jan. 30 in Springfield and concluding Feb. 28 back in Springfield. The University of Illinois Extension workshops provide Illinois livestock producers the manure management training they need to meet the requirements of the state's Livestock Management Facilities Act.

Office of International Programs announces the 2018-19 Academy for Global Engagement (Global Academy)

Seven faculty and staff from the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) have been selected to form the newest cohort of the ACES Academy for Global Engagement (Global Academy).  

The 2018-19 Global Academy, which marks the twelfth year of the program, will focus on building academic partnerships in South Africa, specifically with the University of Pretoria and the University of Kwa Zulu Natal.

Urban metabolism: Collaboration uses big data to look at health of cities through food, water, and energy systems

URBANA, Ill. – The health and sustainability of cities depends, in part, on how well a city manages its food, energy, and water systems. But the flow of those key resources within a city is marked by complex interactions between these systems. Making changes or improvements to one system may cause issues for another.

Rapid population growth in the world’s urban centers calls for a greater understanding of these complex interrelationships between the systems, also known as the food-energy-water nexus (FEW).

College of ACES new facilities open house to highlight increased research and learning capabilities

URBANA, Ill. – Students in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) at the University of Illinois are learning hands-on about food systems, starting from seed improvement and soil science to commercial food processing, as well as bioprocessing technologies for industry, thanks to new facilities and renovations across the ACES campus.

The College of ACES is celebrating the completion of multiple renovated and newly constructed facilities with an open house on Friday, Sept. 28, on the Urbana-Champaign campus.
